Historical details

This variety belongs to the "Reine Claude" group of plums, known in France since the Middle Ages. Reine Claude de Bavay is thought to originate from Belgium in the 19th century, and was possibly raised by Major Esperen of Mechelen in northern Belgium. Esperen was an army officer who fought in the Napoleonic wars, before retiring and becoming an amateur fruit breeder - he was also responsible for the well-known pear variety Josephine de Malines. Reine Claude de Bavay is closely related to Old Green Gage - in fact "gage" and "reine claude" refer to the same kind of sweet-flavored green plums.
