All about Rosy Gage plum tree

Rosy Gage is a sweet-flavored late-season plum. The plums are yellow-green, but take on an attractive dusky red color when exposed to sunlight.

The plums ripen over an extended period, so you can pick small quantities at a time for eating fresh.

How to grow

Rosy Gage is somewhat susceptible to fungal infections such as brown rot and black knot.

It is not self-fertile, but is readily pollinated by other European plum varieties.

For best results, thin the fruitlets in late spring. The remaining fruitlets will then grow larger and have a better flavor.

A peculiar feature of Rosy Gage is that the leaf canopy becomes quite dense as the tree grows older, which affects the coloration of the plums. Annual pruning is therefore necessary.

History

Rosy Gage was developed by Cornell University in the late 20th century and released in 2006. However it is very much in the style of traditional European plums, and is a seedling of Imperial Epineuse.

It is cold-hardy and a reliable cropper.
