Vanier is a bright red Japanese plum with firm juicy yellow flesh

Vanier is one of the latest-ripening of the Japanese plums, the plums should be ready in late August to early September. Unusually among plums the flavor improves a week or so after picking.

How to grow

Vanier produces a vigorous upright tree which fruits from an early age.

The tree will readily over-crop, which can lead to branches breaking under the weight of plums. If necessary thin the fruitlets aggressively in June, this will also improve the size of the remaining plums.

The plums ripen over an extended period, which is ideal for the backyard grower.

Vanier is not self-fertile, but is readily pollinated by most other Japanese plums - apart from Early Golden and Shiro.

Vanier was developed in the 1980s at the Vineland Research Station in Ontario, Canada.
