Malus domestica 'Mettais'
Mettais is one of the few French traditional cider varieties that can be used for single-varietal cider, as well as blended cider and calvados. It produces a bittersweet juice.
Mettais blooms early, but is readily pollinated by other early-blooming apple varieties.
Like most French cider varieties it is quite susceptible to many of the apple diseases found in the US, particularly fireblight.
