Huffcap is an old English term used to describe any kind of strong drink, and has been applied to several perry pear varieties. However it may also be a term for varieties which have the distinctive elliptical shape characteristic of this variety.

Unlike most perry varieties, Yellow Huffcap pears will hang on the tree and become over-ripe, so must either be picked or shaken to the ground.
Yellow Huffcap is heavy-cropping but has a tendency to lapse into biennial bearing. Thin the fruitlets in June to prevent this.
