Bluebyrd is a late-ripening European plum, with a dark blue skin and particularly sweet yellow flesh.
Bluebyrd will often over-set fruitlets after the blossom, and for best fruit-size and flavor it is usually necessary to thin the crop in late spring.
It was developed specifically for resistance to the fungal infection black knot.

Bluebryd was developed at the Kearneysville, WV, research station of the USDA Agricultural Research Service, and released in 1998. It was named in honor of Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, a long-standing supporter of the station.
