BlackGold is a self-fertile early / mid-season sweet black cherry, ripening about a week after Bing. As with most "black" cherries, the fruits are more usually a dark black-red color.
Being self-fertile it can be planted on its own, without the need for another compatible cherry tree nearby. Conversely, Black Gold is likely a good pollinator of most other cherry varieties, particularly late-blooming varieties (e.g. Regina).
BlackGold is cold hardy and flowers quite late in the spring blossom season, so is useful if you are in an area prone to early spring frosts.
As with many self-fertile varieties Black Gold can easily over-set fruit and if this happens it is important to thin the fruitlets. Thinning cherries by hand is a tedious job, but important to maintain the fruit size and flavor.

BlackGold was developed by Cornell University and released in 2006. Its parents are Stark Gold and Stella.
