Find the position of the sun in your garden

If you live in the UK, northern Europe, or northern states of the USA, you can assume that most fruit trees prefer to be planted in full sun. Although you probably know which direction is north or south it is not always easy to know where the sun is during the growing season.

SunEarthTools.com have developed a handy mapping tool which shows you the position of the sun during the course of the day and any time of year at your exact location.

To use the tool, enter the first line of your address, town, and post code / zipcode in the search box, and also your time zone, then click the 'execute' button.

You should then see a satellite image of your location, with the 'sun path' overlayed as a yellow line.

You can also change the date to see where the sun will be at different times of the year. For fruit-growing purposes it is useful to see where the sun will be in early spring (for the blossom season) and then late summer (when fruits are ripening). With these options you should be able to find the best place to plant fruit trees in your garden or orchard location.
