Wolf River is in flowering group 3. Wolf River is self-sterile and needs to be pollinated by another tree of a different variety nearby. Since it flowers in the middle of the blossom season it can be pollinated by most other apple trees.
Wolf River pre-dates the development of modern disease-resistant apples, but has a high resistance to scab, mildew, and fireblight.
The tree is also exceptionally winter-hardy, long-lived and productive.
Found in Wolf River, Wisconsin, around 1875. Thought to be a seedling of a Russian variety called Alexander.
